Noah Riley Mathis (Mathews)

Noah was born in Union City around 1874 and we're trying to find out who his parents are..he later moved to KY and married Bernice Humphries.. He died in 1946, in Metropolis Illinois, I have his Death Certificate and Obituary and neither list his parents or any siblings... any info would be greatly appreciated.. Also looking for any info on his daughters Ruth born about 1897 and Opal about 1910, his son Walter is my great grandfather and have plenty of info on him...

Your Riley is probably the son of William H Mathis, b 1845, incorrectly recorded as Riley W. Mathis b 1872 on the 1880 census about 12 miles east of Union City across the county line near Martin, in Weakley Co. In 1900 Riley, b Dec 1870, is north of Weakley Co in Marshall Co KY with Beulah

According to the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census of Marshall Co, and 1930 in Paducah, Noah and Beulah's children were Earl b 1902, Guy b 1905, Oscar b 1908, Joe b 1911, Darrell b 1915, and Helen b 1919. No Walter or Opal.

I'm sure on the childrens names of the Noah Mathis I'm looking for, Walter is my Grandpas(still living) father and he met Opal and Ruth...Ruth married a man with the last name Culps and Opal married twice we know of to a Shaw and a Bennett, as her last name changed between Noahs Obit in 1946 and Walters in 1960... do you still think William H and Eliza could be his parents? thanks for your reply..

A Riley Mathews w/wife Bernie in Hopkins Co KY in 1910 and 1920 w/children Ruth 1897, Warren 1905, Vivian 1907, Dora 1909, Opal 1910, and Mary Ellen 1911. This is most likely your Noah Riley. Prob is ... birth for Riley on both census is 1875 AL, not TN. Not found in 1900 or 1930 or 1940.

Yes that is him.. Warren changed his name to Walter, he remarried after Bernices(1920) death to Addie Shelby Cairel, He appears in the 1930 and 1940 census.. Have a good handle on his life ..where he was and when, just trying to find out who his parents are... greatly appreciate your response...

and yes.. some things list him being born in Alabama.. his death certificate and other documents list Tennesee which is puzzling.. the census' say alabama but thats him and his children... Vivian died around age 12, Ruth and Opal were still alive in 1960... the others are listed as deceased in his obit in 1946

As far as his place of birth I would tend to believe the earlier census than the informant on the d cert recollection years later. Riley may have lived in Obion Co at one time in his youth but I cannot find him on the 1880 or 1900 census.
